University inhabitants stop time in a new outdoor space

Team design with Alexander Doppenburg and Joshua Kurnia
Created with Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator and more

This project was conceived by the Iowa State University Team and created for the 2017 Walt Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Design Competition.  The competition is a way for students and recent graduates to showcase their talents and for Walt Disney Imagineering to identify new talent. This year's prompt was to create a new outdoor space within our college or university that addresses current students, faculty and visitors needs while providing a respite from the stresses of college life.

An Hourglass represents the constant ticking of time, but what if an Hourglass is turned on its side? The sand become still, representing the stopping of time. The structure is shaped like an hourglass tipped on its side. There are two central areas, the below-ground and the above-ground. The below-ground offers a more personal experience through individual pods while the above-ground is social experience with heated benches. Hourglass can be used year-round with geothermal heating and cooling, allowing guests to enjoy the beauty of the four seasons. This project is the sole property of Walt Disney Imagineering and all rights to use these ideas are exclusive to Walt Disney Imagineering
